About the Sustainable Steel Community Cohort

Upgrading steel plants requires community support, investment, and advocacy. The Sustainable Steel Community Cohort (SSCC) was created to empower steel communities to lead the way in shaping a cleaner steel industry.

Through political education and storytelling, participants will envision a future that strengthens the local economy, safeguards worker health, and addresses the steel industry’s impacts on land, water, air, and community well-being.

Community members will gain the tools, knowledge, and networks to drive meaningful change by building local power and connecting with broader campaigns.

Together, we can forge a stronger, cleaner steel industry for future generations.

2025 Cohort

The 2025 cohort launches in April and will run for 5-6 months with up to 20 community participants.

Sessions will blend virtual and in-person formats, covering topics like "Steel 101," renewable energy and technology, health and environmental impacts, and more. Participants will build leadership skills and create "Steel Stories" to share their experiences and perspectives of living near steel facilities.
